August 9, 1960: Anniston, AL. Mason’s advertised their new store hours Monday thru Saturday 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The company stated it was for the public’s convenience. Originally located in the 1100 Block of Noble Street, by the 1960s the store had moved to South Noble Street.
August 10, 1916: Anniston, AL. C. B. Freel Clothing Co. offered Palm Beach and Cool Cloth Suits for $4.85. The clothing company was in the 1000 Block of Noble Street. His son, E. B. Freel, later owned The Globe Clothing Company.
August 11, 1952: Anniston, AL. The Anniston Parks and Recreation Department hosted a Field Day at Zinn Park. The event, lasting from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM, was a chance for the children from the city playgrounds to participate in a softball throw for distance, 50-yard dash, sack race, three-legged race, eating contest, wheel barrow race, and tug-of-war. The day included a talent show where each playground would send representatives to participate. The evening ended with the children swimming free of charge in the pool.
August 12, 1945: Anniston, AL. Roberts Beauty Shop advertised they were accepting appointments for permanents. The beauty shop, located at 1205 Noble Street, was renamed in the mid-1940s. The shop was originally opened in the mid-1930s in the old Dixie Stages building by Rose Flescher.
August 13, 1926: Anniston, AL. The Standard Oil Company announced it was selling Crown Ethyl Gasoline for only 3 cents a gallon more than the traditional gasoline. The Standard Oil station at 13th and Noble Streets was one of the early downtown Anniston service stations. It was built in the mid-1920s and stayed a Sinclair Oil station until around mid-1930s.
August 14, 1927: Jacksonville State Teachers College, AL. President C. W. Daugette presided over the commencement ceremonies for the teacher’s college at 6:00 PM in front of Bibb Graves Hall. The graduating class had 81 members who wrote a patriotic pageant entitled “This Land of Ours” to celebrate their graduation. The pageant was directed by J. L. Hendrix, head of the college’s English Department.
August 15, 1943: Anniston, AL. The Jeff Davis Beauty Shop advertised expert beauticians and invited Anniston ladies to observe the trained operators on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The hotel had a beauty shop starting in the mid-1930s. However, the shop was converted to a barber shop in the 1940s that remained in operation throughout the existence of the hotel.
