Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County---August 30-September 5

August 30, 1951: Anniston, AL. Busch’s Jewelers and Opticians announced their Grand Opening at 1016 Noble Street next door to Butler’s Shoes. The Grand Opening Sale included Bulova watches for $29 down with weekly payments under “Busch’s Kredit plan”.

August 31, 1919: Anniston, AL. J. C. Wheeler Motor Company proudly announced they were the only car repair shop in Anniston with a burning-in machine and worked exclusively on Ford cars. Repairs were not the only services performed at the shop on East 11th Street near Wilmer Avenue. The company was an Exide Service Station that offered car washes as well as repairs.

September 1, 1932: Anniston, AL. Anniston Cycle and Sports Store had bicycles priced between $19 and $37. These bikes were targeted at boys who rode to school. During the first half of the 20th Century, bicycles were a popular mode of transportation.

September 2, 1927: Anniston, AL. Warnock Furniture, at 809 Noble Street, offered a 10-piece bedroom suite for $98. 50. The suite included a bed, dresser, chifforobe, bed spread, cover, two shades, two pillows, and bench. The customer had the option to pay $1.50 down with weekly payments for the items.

September 3, 1947: Anniston, AL. Cook Furniture celebrated their 20th Anniversary. The company opened in 1927 and moved to 1214 Noble Street, next to the Alabama Hotel, in the early 1930s where the business remained until it closed in 1980.

September 4, 1921: Calhoun County, AL. The Anniston Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Special Dairy School throughout the county at various schools during this week. The schools that received this presentation were Piedmont, Oxford, White Plains, Jacksonville, Ohatchee, Alexandria, and Anniston.

September 5, 1906: Anniston, AL. Shelnutt Mercantile Co., at the corner of 13th Street and Moore Avenue, was selling summer bargain items just in time for the start of school. The sale was to last 20 days and conclude at the end of September. The building that housed Shelnutt Mercantile was the original City Land Building.
