September 27, 1926: Anniston, AL. “Sunset Homesites” on Sunset Drive near East 10th Street were set for auction at 2:30 PM. Smith and McClanahan of Springfield, TN oversaw the auction for this development for the Sunset Land Company. The land company was organized by Hillyer Robinson and I. E. DeHart in 1921.
September 28, 1950: Anniston, AL. The Keyes Company, at 1312 Noble Street, announced their appointment as the authorized dealer for Crosley Home Appliances. The company planned an open house soon for all Calhoun Countians to inspect the new appliances.
September 29, 1949: Jacksonville, AL. Marbut Furniture Company offered 33 1/3% off their entire stock of furnishings to celebrate their fourth anniversary. This sale lasted for ten days, until October 8th. By 1952, the company became the Marbut Trading Center.
September 30, 1938: Fort McClellan, AL. The completion of the Reilly Airfield was heralded in the Anniston Star. Many local companies provided construction materials for this military project including sand from John B. LaGarde and trucks from Nixon Transfer. Reilly Field was one of the first landing fields to use Road-Tex Cotton Fabric as the road base for the air strip.
October 1, 1925: Anniston, AL. George E. Barlow Chevrolet advertised the new vehicles at the dealership as “the world’s most desirable car and economically reliable”. The dealership was located on the corner of Gurnee and 12th Streets.
October 2, 1952: Anniston, AL. The Economy Auto Stores announced a sale on store merchandise as well as encouraged patrons to consider layaway for Christmas. As part of the sale, bikes were marked down and car tires were sold for less than $20. The business, at the corner of 10th and Noble Streets, occupied part of the Noble Theatre building.
October 3, 1941: Anniston, AL. The Darling Shop, at 1122 Noble Street, announced their formal re-opening. This women’s clothing store had opened at 1124 Noble Street in September 1936 under the management of Jack Tenenbaum.
