Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County---November 1-7

November 1, 1936: Jacksonville, AL. Major Albert K. Mathews, Fort McClellan Post Chaplain, conducted the communion a the 11 AM service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Jacksonville’s Episcopal Church was founded in 1848 and the church building constructed in 1856 and consecrated the following year.

November 2, 1928: Anniston, AL. Notre Dame played the Alabama Military Institute (AMI) football team at 3:30 PM on the Eight Street and Leighton Avenue Campus of AMI. The final score 19 to 0 showed the toughness of the AMI Tigers who allowed Notre Dame to score no points.

November 3, 1933: Anniston, AL. The Burns Store Inc., at 1219 Noble Street, advertised the sale of apples for 5 cents a dozen and 10 pds. of Irish potatoes for 19 cents. The store offered free delivery for goods as well as free parking spaces at the store.

November 4, 1945: Anniston, AL. The Macdonald-Glass Wholesale Grocers was one of the sponsors for the Victory Loan Drive. The grocers, located at 1108 Moore Avenue, was the original site of the Anniston Mercantile Wholesale Grocers. In October 1964, Macdonald-Glass merged with Chastain-Roberts Company under the umbrella of the IGA Stores.

November 5, 1902: Anniston, AL. The Anniston City Furniture Company announced a moving sale at their 916-918 Noble Street location. The company would soon move to their new building at 1132 Noble Street near the nearly constructed Alabama Hotel. The company advertised bargains on furniture, rugs, and other items in stock.

November 6, 1903: Anniston, AL. Anniston Cordage Company, in the 300 Block of Noble Street, was seeking young women at least 18 years of age to work in the cotton mill on the night shift. The company was organized around 1892 by William H. Zinn and production of cotton rope as well as cord started in 1893. The company was sold several times throughout its history and eventually became known as Samson Cordage Works until it closed in 1993.

November 7, 1918: Anniston, AL. It was reported in The Anniston Star that the Germans accepted the conditions for an armistice to end hostilities in World War I. The city of Anniston planned a torch-light parade to celebrate the armistice on this night. The celebration was premature since the official armistice was not signed by the Germans until November 11th.
