Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County---January 3-9
With the holidays over, we return to everyday life. This week’s edition of Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County Blog looks at shopping and housing options in early Anniston history. January 3, 1957: Anniston, AL. The B. F. Goodrich Store, at 1211 Wilmer Avenue, held a January Bargain sale on this date. The store offered mixing bowls for $1.99, mat covers for $17.99, and bicycles for $43.95. Patrons had access to park at the rear of the store for free.
January 4, 1901: Anniston, AL. The Wilmer Hotel, on the corner of 10th Street and Wilmer Avenue, advertised furnished rooms for permanent and transient guests. The office, hotel, and Ladies’ Parlor had heating elements and lighting was sufficient. The hotel also had a café for clients to take meals.
January 5, 1949: Anniston, AL. Glover’s Clothing Store, on West 11th Street across from the Calhoun County Courthouse, was selling “Factory Close-Outs”. The store had 100% all wool pants for $5.95 and 100% all wool gaberdine pants for $8.96. Sports shirts ranged in price from $3.95 to $4.95.
January 6, 1944: Anniston, AL. Dobson’s, in the 900 Block of Noble Street, announced they had cut prices on military supplies. The clothing store sold field jackets, officer’s blouses, trench coats, wool shirts, officer’s trousers, and enlisted caps. The items were offered at a reduced rate for clearance.
January 7, 1945: Bynum, AL. The Anniston Ordnance Depot, under the operation of Anniston Warehouse Corporation, was part of the Ordnance Department Reclaiming Program. The depot was one of five “returned materials” centers in the United States during World War II and continued this mission to the present.
January 8, 1929: Anniston, AL. Milady Shoppe, at 1013 Noble Street, was a ladies’ ready-to-wear and millinery. The store announced they were holding a $10 dress sale. The site had been the home to Hunter Brothers and Grace McConnell’s women’s store before it became Milady Shoppe. By 1931, the site was the Quality Shoppe.
January 9, 1949: Fort McClellan, AL. O. H. Parker and Company announced an open house at Pelham Heights Homes. The real estate agents offered no down payments to veterans and monthly payments as low as $36. 91. The subdivision was located across from the North Gate (Galloway) at Fort McClellan and homes were available for immediate possession for any veteran that was honorable discharged and regularly employed.
