Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County---January 10-16
It’s back to school and work after the holidays. In this week’s edition of Way Back Wednesday in Calhoun County Blog we travel to Oxford, Jacksonville, and Anniston. January 10, 1947: Anniston, AL. The Ritz Flower Shop announced it was moving to 24 East 12th Street. The shop was located in the Ritz Theater complex at 1300 Noble Street. Even though the Ritz Flower Shop moved the site would continue to have a flower shop occupy the space until around 1960.
January 11, 1940: Anniston, AL. Economy Auto Store announced they were moving to a new and larger location on the corner of 10th and Noble Streets. The old Noble Theatre was built to house businesses in addition to the theatre and the auto store was one of many tenants over the years.
January 12, 1958: Anniston, AL. The Interior Shop, at 120 West 11th Street, upholstered furniture. The business did not require a down payment for services and allowed patrons to pay off the debt in months. Earl Tyson and Henry Rudisill were the proprietors and offered free estimates on items.
January 13, 1947: Oxford, AL. Service Drug Company, at 504 Main Street, announced the formal opening of the new streamlined soda fountain service. The fountain service would be in full operation on the January 14th. Service Drug’s soda fountain used Lilly Pure Ice Cream.
January 14, 1953: Anniston, AL. Gay Clothing Company offered men’s suits for $20.00. The clothing store was located at 1123 Noble Street with hours of operation from 9 AM to 5:30 PM daily and to 9:00 PM on Friday nights.
January 15, 1949: Anniston, AL. The local V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Hall, at 112 East 12th Street, held a dance with music from Don’s Melody Makers. The public was invited to attend with the admission cost of $1.
January 16, 1930: Jacksonville Teachers College, AL. College President C. W. Daugette and Dr. Claude R. Wood attended a meeting of Alabama Teachers College officials in Birmingham. The meeting was to discuss and set the curriculum for all the state teacher colleges in Alabama.
